Mackinac Island

We all know that I'm obsessed with traveling....take me anywhere, call it a trip, and I'm a happy gal.

For my bday, P. is taking me on a trip to Mackinac Island in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. There are quite a few things that excite me about this little getaway.
1. P. won't work for three days. He's pulling some seriously long hours these days.
2. They are famous for their fudge
3. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the island
4. Renting a bicycle built for two
5. Sailing around the island and the historic lighthouse

I'll post some pics when we get back. We are looking for restaurant recommendations, so let me know if you've ever been...

Oh I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mackinac Island! I'm so excited for you that you are going there. I have so many happy memories there..one being that Dan and I went there together before we started dating and that is when we started liking each other. Have a GREAT time!!! Enjoy good fudge!! Take lots of pics!!! You will love it!!!!

Bring your bikes! Rental prices on the island are upwards of $35 a day ... and the horsedrawn taxis are charming the first time, and then annoying afterwards. Plus, you can see more of the island with a bike. It's a beautiful island, but also surprisingly kitschy. So get out of the main ferry landing area ASAP and enjoy the peace and quiet! Have fun!

You are going to love it! I second what Sharon says and suggest you ride your bike to the less busy parts of the island. Also, rent a horse and go horseback riding.

I should tell you that Mackinac Island is officially considered part of the Upper Peninsula, and the natives will get good naturedly "offended" if you suggest they are trolls. (that's Yooper slang for those of us that live "under the bridge") Have fun...

Oh, I forgot to leave a restaurant recommendation. I haven't eaten anywhere on the island other than the Grand hotel, but I saw two places in the same part of the island that looked cute. The Inn at Stonecliffe has a restaurant, and it's a nice bike ride up and very remote. Also right there is the Woods restaurant, which looks adorable from the outside. It's operated by the Grand Hotel folks, so I'd assume it's good (although probably pricey!)

So when's the trip?

Happy belated birthday! I don't have any recommendations because A) I have never been there
B) I have never been to Michigan
C) I don't own a bike

But damn that fudge sounds good! Enjoy!

Does everyone know that I haven't really ridden a bike for an extended period of time since the fifth grade?

That means this will be another one of our adventure trips, whether intended or not!

There are some steep hills on the island, so make sure instead of riding down them that you walk your bike!
